Iceland is one of the best locations in the world to enjoy whale watching. The abundance and diversity of the marine life in the waters around Akureyri provide ideal feeding grounds, thus attracting over twenty species of whales, dolphins and porpoises. The boat is docked only a ten minutes easy walk from the cruise ship port and visible as you step ashore.
After being welcomed on board the boat by its friendly crew the adventure commences. The boat sails in the pristine waters of Eyjafjordur Fjord and passengers can enjoy the beauty of the tall, snow-capped mountains that line the seemingly endless fjord.
The guide will inform passengers of the various species which may be seen during the trip and engages all in the whole-hearted and exciting pursuit of the ocean’s gentle giants. As with all wild nature experiences, sightings cannot be guaranteed. However, the potential for whale watching from Akureyri is excellent; it has a 99% success rate for spotting whales. Many species have been sighted here, including blue-fin, humpback, minke and sei whales. The best period for whale watching in Iceland is the late spring to early fall months (May – September).
It is recommended that you wear warm, layered clothing with a waterproof outer layer. It is good to be prepared with hats, mittens, scarves and sunglasses since the weather at sea can be considerably colder than on land. Sunscreen is advised on sunny days since the reflection of light from the sea is strong.
We do not recommend this shore excursion for passengers who are dependent on wheelchairs.
